Step 1: Keyword Research
Keyword research is a vitally important aspect of your search engine optimization campaign. In order to rank high, you need to target the right keyword. If your site is targeting the wrong keywords, the search engines and your customers may never find you, resulting in lost dollars and meaningless rankings. Keyword research requires an understanding of what keyword phrases best reflect your business’s products or services, who is searching for your business’ products or services, and why they are searching a particular set of search terms or phrases. Keyword research is vital to a succesful search engine optimization campaign, both for organic and pay per click search marketing.
Keyword research, at its essence, is market research. It tells you what people are interested in, and in what relative numbers. Keyword research and analysis can be a daunting task, when done correctly, and expert keyword research is the foundation to a successful SEO campaign. Many new website owners think the keyword research analysis process is easy. Keyword research can’t give you substantially different data every time you conduct this, unless you find a radically different avenue for search query data, so you should use the keyword research data (modify your site, write content) cautiously. If not, you’ll have to rework what you have done and will lose precious time (and, maybe, reputation) if done improperly.
How to conduct Keyword Research?
Over the internet there are many free keyword research tools. Here I outline the two l used most:
1. Wordtracker being the most popular in the SEO industry has huge database with the most recent information. It allows you to check the competition levels on exact matches at most large search engines and directories, and it includes the data into your existing keyword research report. Wordtracker can search its database of over 300 million searches over the last 60 days, and find out if anyone searches on the term you picked.
2. Google Keywords Tool. This tool is free for all to use and it can be very useful to give you an idea about what keywords are hot. Just type in your the keyword phrase you are researching and you will get the results of Advertiser Competition, Search Volume for the present month, and Average Monthly Search Volume over a recent 12 month period.
