Is Directory Submission Method Dead Yet? (An update of my December RankHigh Testing)
I know I promised you all that I will run a test on directory submission in my previous post. But there has been a delay, because….
1. I changed a new job
2. I changed a new laptop
Probably you will call me crazy to make a career move at this downturn, leaving my comfort zone, jumping to another uncertainty… I guess this is sort of risk one needs to take if you see the opportunity comes knocking on the door.
Secondly, I moved to the most undesirable OS, Windows Vista after making the career move. So, it takes time for me to move my IM related programs “secretly” to this new laptop and get used to the new OS.
Anyway, let’s proceed with the directory submission test.

Objective:
To determine if directory submission is effective in link building process for a website.

Step 1. Establish the baseline
First, let’s see what happened for the past 2 weeks+. I need to re-establish my baseline again before I start my directory submission test. (Note, I didn’t do anything to my blog within this 16 days.)
Yahoo Site Explorer results as per 16 November 08.![]()
Today’s result. Not bad, more pages being indexed and more backlinks. Cool : )

Step 2: Define keyword, site description for directory submission.
I prepared four versions for my title and site descriptions.
While submitting the site by using this directory submission software, it will rotate the link title (anchor text), description and keywords with each directory that makes each submission look as unique as possible and also helps get the website listed in search engines under many different keywords and link titles.
If the submitted link has the same title in all the directories, Google sees that link as spam and will discount it heavily. Better if you vary your anchor text in a random manner: part of the link titles contain primary keywords, another portion contain the secondary set of keywords and third (or forth) set of keywords.
That’s enough to satisfy Google. The secondary and third sets of keywords are set up in a way that they reinforce the primary keywords.

Step 3: Directory Submission Starts
For today, I will just submit to 22 directories of PR 0 using Express Submit. There are 2751 more directories to go. Fear not ; ) If you are impatient, you can submit to all directories in a day using the Express Submit option. But to play on the safe side, let’s do it slowly to fly under Google radar.

Step 4: Results after 3 minutes and 20 sec
The green colours indicated I have successfully submitted my site information. Total is 10 out of 22 attempts.
Blue indicates User Bypass. I have 1 blue result because I choose to skip it as it is a weight loss site.
The other 10 red results are because these sites need me to agree to their rules, so I need to use Manual Submit option to get pass these site.
Not bad for the first 3 min. I will continue to submit tomorrow.
Stay tuned!

as this might sound; “it will rotate the link title (anchor text), description and keywords with each directory”
fact of the matter is that directory reviewers, especially those who’s dir is not protected against automated submissions, get hundreds od submissions daily, of which 80% is crap, so they’re trigger fast to delete subs. which is way it’s so important to follow all their little rules; stuff like maximum title length, minimum description length etc.
that’s where this program fails … you have to control over this, so it will result in a high number of rejections … ok, ok, the speed of the process makes up for that, as you can indeed do sooo many …. fact remains; that most directories that are actually worth submitting to … are protected and so need to be done manually anyway !!!
I’m looking forward to your test of the manual submissions
I’ll be back …
cheers,
Michiel
